Med ASD har man oftast mindre energi än andra, och den energi man har går också fortare åt. Det är svårt att helt och hållet förändra. Men man kan planera så att den kraft man har används till det som är viktigt för en själv och för familjen. Första steget är att göra en energikartläggning för att ta reda på vad som tar och ger energi.
Lena Walleborn är arbetsterapeut på Aspergercenter på Habilitering & Hälsa i Stockholm. Hon har stöttat vuxna med ASD i över 20 år. När det gäller energi tycker hon att personer med ASD behöver bli snällare mot sig själva. Inte minst om de också är föräldrar.
– Att få barn är en omställning för alla. Från att bara ha haft hand om sig själv är det plötsligt en annan persons behov som styr tillvaron. Med autism blir omställningen ännu större. De strategier man tidigare haft för att klara vardagen sätts ofta ur spel.
Lena menar att många föräldrar med ASD sliter hårt för att passa in och för att orka lika mycket som andra. Inte sällan har man också en orealistisk bild av vad andra gör och orkar med.
– Det är lätt att tro att alla andra leker jättemycket med sina barn och lagar mat från grunden varje dag. Men så är det sällan. Alla föräldrar behöver förenkla för att klara av småbarnsåren.
Lenas huvudbudskap är att om man har lite energi och mår dåligt över det så måste man försöka förändra sin situation. Annars är risken att det blir en ond spiral. Första steget är att acceptera att man har mindre energi.
– Många försöker hela tiden kämpa för att få mer energi, men det går helt enkelt inte. Däremot kan man planera och anpassa så att man lägger sin energi på rätt saker.
Första steget är att inse att man har mindre energi än andra.
Lena menar att det är en nyckel att lära sig hur ens energi går åt. För att göra det behöver man kartlägga sin energiåtgång.
– Man behöver vara lite som en detektiv och studera sig själv. Börja skriva ner vad man gör på dagarna och fundera över hur mycket energi olika aktiviteter och situationer kostar. Vad dränerar mig på energi? Vad ger energi? Vad flyter på utan att varken kosta eller bidra?
Genom att markera det som kostar mycket energi med rött och det som ger energi i grönt kan man börja syna sina dagar. Dagar med röda aktiviteter staplade på varandra är olidliga och fungerar inte i längden.
Kartläggningen hjälper en dels att se när på dagen man behöver planera in vila, dels att identifiera riktigt jobbiga situationer som kostar alltför mycket energi. Sådana situationer behöver planeras om. Lena menar att det är fullt möjligt, även om det kan ta lite tid.
– Du kanske till exempel måste börja planera in vila efter duschen om den tar enormt mycket energi. Och så kanske du måste göra något åt morgonrutinen om du är helt sänkt efter att ha fått iväg barnen på morgonen.
Lena menar att kaosartade situationer som att komma iväg på morgonen kan undvikas om man har bättre rutiner för sig själv som vuxen. Att man själv har en bra rutin för hur man vaknar, väljer kläder och ordnar frukost. När det är ordnat klarar man bättre av barnen.
Det gäller att ha bra rutiner för sig själv som vuxen
– Att få till bra rutiner är inte så lätt, men man kan få hjälp av habiliteringen. Jag har hjälpt många föräldrar att bena ut jobbiga situationer och sedan har vi tillsammans kommit på lösningar. Det kan handla om allt från tidshjälpmedel som påminner om att det är dags att äta frukost till bättre system för barnens kläder. Det kan också handla om man skapar en ordningsföljd som man följer varje morgon så att det inte blir så många valmöjligheter.
Lena har under flera år hållit i kurser om energi i vardagen för vuxna med ASD. På första lektionen brukar nästan alla säga att de kommit till kursen för att orka mer.
Många blir besvikna när hon berättar att det inte handlar om att få mer energi eller att försöka orka mer utan om att planera så att man lägger den energi man har på rätt saker. Man måste börja se på sin energi som en dyrbar resurs och bli mer rädd om hur den används.
Förutom att minska belastningen behöver man planera in gröna aktiviteter, som ger energi.
– Många tänker att gröna aktiviteter är sådant som man gör när allt annat är klart. Men det fungerar inte så. Tvärtom måste du göra gröna saker för att orka med de röda. Nästan alla jag möter med ASD behöver bli bättre på att planera in vilsamma eller roliga saker.
